Industrial Floating Shelves

Are you busting your butt to get your house ready for family next week?! I am!! Holy Smokes this year went by super fast.

We bought our house almost a year ago and it’s taken a while to find and buy decorations. I try to be frugal when it comes to these kind of things because I love changing things up! Hopefully these shelves will not go out of style quickly and we can use them year after year!

It is super gratifying to say “We made that!” ❤

What we bought, all from Home Depot:

  • 4 – Black Iron Pipe Floor Flange 1/2 inch
  • 4 – Black Steel Nipple Piping 8 in X 1/2 inch
  • 4 – Black Iron Cap 1/2 inch
  • 1- 1 in. X 8 in X 8 ft. board. CHECK for straightness of board!!
  • Sand Paper 100-120 grit
  • Wood Stain of your choice. (I wanted to match wood I already had in my house so I chose this color “Carrington”)
  • Heavy Duty Wall Anchors

What we spent: around $65 (kinda costly due to iron piping)

Directions:

  1. Measure how long you’d like your shelf(s) to be. I originally planned to make 3 all centered on the wall. Then being ME I changed my mind.
  2. Cut wood the length you would like.
  3. Sand and distress wood to your liking…. we beat it up with some heavy tools to add dents and then I used a chisel to add more character. The wood will have hard corners unless you sand them down. We used 100 grit to get rounded, smooth edges.
  4. Stain the wood. We used old shop rags and did 1 even, thin coat and then a medium coat after letting dry for a couple hours. We propped them up on old paint cans to minimize any transfer.
  5. Let dry, after a day or two I added some extra stain ONLY on the edges of the wood. I got this idea from look at the “industrial” furniture I already own.
  6. Install piping with wall anchors. I suggest having a helping hand and a level. I found it helpful that we could just screw in the pipe into the floor flange.
  7. Place your shelves on top of piping.
  8. DECORATE! I even framed a picture I took while on vacation this year in Rosemary Beach, FL. (cheap alternative to real art) 😉

We were super impressed with the outcome of these shelves. Yes, we could of bought some comparable and cheaper at like Target, but I doubt the quality and style would be half as nice!! Link to the expensive version at Restoration Hardware
